It is not an every day occurrence to go out to buy a used car; therefore, having a solid car check list to ensure that the car purchase proceeds as planned can be important. There are a number of things to remember when visiting used car dealers. Most cities will have quite a few reliable car dealers, but it will be up to you to find the one in your area you can rely on.

A good idea is to just imagine that you are finally standing in front of your dream car. All the desired features are there for you like the model, color, there are no obvious dents and scratches, and it runs perfectly. The vehicle passes your initial inspection. Now the time has come for you to take out your check list and make sure every item you marked down is there.

1. Is this the car what you really want? Although it would be cool to own a fast sports car, it may not be the best automobile for you. Especially when you have a family, you may need something more contemporary and bigger with comfortable seating for everyone with lots of storage space. You may also want to read various consumers car reviews. From them, you will be able to understand which vehicles are reliable and which ones to stay clear of.

2. Is the price right for you? If you know what kind of brand and model you want, check its value ahead of time. Compose a list of all the cars you are considering and take this with you to the used car dealers. When making your list, take not only the brand, model and options into account, but also the year the car was built. There is indeed quite a bit of difference if the car was manufactured in 2006 or 2010.

3. Are the ownership records and maintenance logs available? How many times did this vehicle switch hands? The inspection of maintenance records is important for used cars. Melbourne salesmen know that there is quite a difference in car performance if the vehicle was serviced by an amateur, or by mechanics in a professional shop. Consequently, they should not give you a hard time.

4. What is the overall condition of the car? Take a good look at the car’s paneling, and check the tires for tread, uneven wear, and cracks. Is there rust damage? Have parts been replaced due to an accident – mismatched colors may be an indicator? Do you suspect coolant and oil leaks? While you are looking around, also inspect the interior of the car. No warning lights should be blinking!

5. What kind of warranty and road side assistance is offered? Does the dealer accept trade-ins? What are the finance options? While test driving the car, ask the salesperson as many questions as you can think of. Also, pay attention to the way the car drives. If you notice unusual sounds or vibrations, ask for an explanation. Do not worry to drive used cars on the highway, or for a longer period of time. As we know, not all defects show up after a quick minute ride.

With your list at ready, you should be able to get the information you need to make an informed decision. Just remember, you do not have the settle for the first one you see… there are more used cars available so keep your options open!
